Hello From The Other Side
I’m still here! The craziness of spring has begun to ease, and I’m feeling a little more sane every day. Our family will be vacationing soon in my home away from home; I’m counting down the days until I wake up with the ocean outside my back door.
My book continues its stay in publishing purgatory. I have signed off on the final edits, giving my permission to send this thing to print. I have yet to receive a publication date or see artwork for the cover.
Melmac Florals has a logo! Many thanks to Ella Hosse for designing something so cute and so me. Here’s what I wrote about the logo on Instagram a few weeks ago:
Melmac is a mashup of my first and last name. For several years, I sang with Metro Nashville Chorus. I was the second Melissa to join, and for a time, there were 4 Melissas on the risers every week! I sometimes went by Melmac to avoid confusion. I also liked that Melmac was the home planet of the furry alien from that 80s TV sitcom, Alf. The font on all of my website page titles is in lowercase. It seemed fitting, since I’m a shortie, so I wanted to use that style in my flower business logo. My three favorite flowers are bearded iris, sunflower, and dahlia. Iris in spring, sunflower in summer, and dahlia in fall. I wanted a couple of bees in the logo because, in Greek, Melissa means honeybee.
I made my farmer’s market debut on June 1st. Prepping for that first market was chaotic and stressful, but I had several sales and left feeling pretty encouraged. I’ve had fewer sales at the last two markets, which is frustrating. But on the weekends, I have been able to display the flowers that don’t sell at Bates; I’ve had some sales there. I’ve also had a couple of special requests for flowers on the side. There are two other stands at the market that are selling flowers this year. Finding ways to stand out and keep my pricing comparable has been tricky. I didn’t know what to expect heading into this venture. I thought I’d have a good handle on the logistics after a couple of weeks. Three markets down and I’m still searching for my footing. But I’m having lots of fun along the way!
I’ve been so busy with the farmer’s market that I haven’t been able to keep up my weekly Flower Power Friday arrangements and Instagram posts. I hope to get back to those. Here’s the last one I posted. This arrangement was ordered for a bridal shower, and I love how it turned out.
